Canadian Government Invests CA$74 Million ($51.44 Million USD) in Quantum Research to Strengthen Global Leadership

The Government of Canada has announced CA$74 million ($51.44 million USD) in funding to support 107 quantum research projects as part of its National Quantum Strategy. The investment, announced by Parliamentary Secretary Sherry Romanado at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Varennes, Québec, aims to advance quantum technologies in computing, communications, materials, and sensing, while reinforcing Canada’s position as a global leader in quantum innovation.

The projects, funded through NSERC’s Alliance Quantum grants, will address critical challenges in quantum science and foster collaborations between universities, private companies, and public organizations. Key areas of focus include quantum algorithms, encryption, and international partnerships with institutions such as France’s Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) and the U.S. National Science Foundation. The initiative will also train over 500 graduates and postdoctoral fellows, strengthening Canada’s quantum workforce.

Since 2022, Canada has invested CA$125 million ($86.9 million USD) in 182 quantum research projects, partnering with 75 organizations, including 58 private-sector companies. This latest funding builds on the CA$360 million ($250.48 million USD) commitment from Budget 2021 to support the National Quantum Strategy, driving innovation and economic growth in the quantum sector.
