Eaton Awarded $7M AFRL Contract to Apply Quantum Computing to Power Grid Security

Intelligent power management company Eaton (NYSE: ETN) has been awarded a $7 million, 24-month contract by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to advance quantum-enabled analytics, machine learning, and advanced visualization for electrical grid resilience. Partnering with quantum hardware developer Infleqtion and Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), the project aims to develop hybrid quantum-classical algorithms to better detect, visualize, and mitigate simultaneous physical and cyber threats targeting critical energy infrastructure.

The initiative directly addresses the complex contingency problem in electrical grid management. While current North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) regulatory standards require power transmission networks to withstand two sequential component failures (N−2), modern grids face unpredictable, compound threat scenarios—including severe weather, wildfires, cyberattacks, and physical sabotage—that demand real-time evaluation of exponentially larger combinatorial configurations.

The 24-month program will encompass developing novel quantum algorithms, optimizing quantum circuits for hybrid quantum-classical execution, testing protocols across multiple quantum hardware platforms, and evaluating hardware error mitigation methods. Leadership from Eaton—including Sid Suryanarayanan, Senior Chief Engineer of Strategic Partnerships and Innovation, and Dr. Christopher A. Herbst, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Innovation—noted that the effort will culminate in a proof-of-concept demonstration showcasing how near-term quantum processors can provide actionable awareness and automated contingency responses for critical defense and commercial power grids.
