French President Emmanuel Macron announced an additional funding of €1 Billion ($1.16B USD) for the country’s Quantum Plan. The Quantum Plan was original funded at €1.8 billion for the period 2021-2025 and then supplemented in 2024 by €500 million from a program to support public procurement in the defense sector. This new announcement is in addition to those earlier fundings.
In his announcement, he noted an acceleration of quantum activity in both the United States and China and indicated a need to have a more proactive European strategy. The announcement also mentioned that France would commit €550 million ($638M USD) to a future European program for semiconductors complementing a national strategy launched in 2022 that includes €5.5 billion in total commitments.
During his address on at the Very Large Computing Center (TGCC) of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in Bruyères-le-Châtel (Essonne) he said, “We are in the thick of the battle for the quantum sector. We have made bold choices in recent years to build our digital sovereignty. Quantum and semiconductors are two key pillars of France 2030.”
