George Mason University has entered into a strategic hardware partnership with Oxford-based quantum infrastructure firm TreQ to deploy an open-architecture quantum computer at its Northern Virginia campus. Supported by catalytic funding from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) alongside university capital, the $7.7 million system will represent the first U.S. deployment of TreQ’s proprietary Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) framework, serving the National Capital Region’s defense, government, and commercial deep-tech ecosystems.

Modularity via Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) Infrastructure
Unlike monolithic quantum computing platforms that permanently bind users to a single physical qubit modality or proprietary control stack, TreQ’s Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) system provides a modular, “built-to-evolve” physical and software enclosure:
- Interchangeable Stack Elements: Allows researchers, defense contractors, and startups to integrate and evaluate different quantum processing units (QPUs), control electronics, cryogenic routing systems, and software compilers within a single standardized enclosure as components mature.
- Supply Chain Testing Bed: Designed to act as an open hardware testbed for third-party component vendors, enabling rapid prototyping across the entire quantum technology stack without requiring single-vendor integration lock-in.
- Operational Management: TreQ will design, deploy, and manage the system’s day-to-day operations while co-developing interdisciplinary research and training curricula with George Mason faculty.
Statewide Ecosystem and International Workforce Initiatives
Led by George Mason University President Gregory Washington, College of Science Dean Cody Edwards, and TreQ CEO Mandy Birch, the initiative expands Virginia’s regional quantum footprint. The system will integrate directly with GMU’s Quantum Science and Engineering Center (QSEC), which recently signed international workforce MOUs with South Korea’s Future Quantum Convergence Forum and the QCI Quantum-AI Convergence Center.
Supported by 24 faculty across seven academic departments, the deployment builds upon Virginia’s first interdisciplinary master’s degree in quantum science and engineering, positioning the Northern Virginia corridor as a hub for regional defense, intelligence, and commercial quantum supply chains.
