
Quemix Inc., a Tokyo-based quantum software and algorithm startup and consolidated subsidiary of TerraSky Co., Ltd., announced it has secured an investment from Honda Motor Co., Ltd. The funding, provided through Honda’s global open innovation initiative, Honda Xcelerator Ventures, aims to accelerate the practical deployment of quantum computing for next-generation materials development.
This investment builds on an established and successful research partnership between Quemix and Honda. In May 2025, the two companies jointly developed a novel quantum state readout technique, which was followed in June 2026 by a breakthrough quantum algorithm designed to exponentially accelerate Density Functional Theory calculations, a cornerstone method in computational chemistry and materials science. Building on this momentum, Quemix plans to leverage its advanced algorithm technologies to transition quantum methods from experimental research directly into practical automotive materials development processes.
The primary initial focus will be accelerating the development of next-generation battery materials to support Honda’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Established in 2019, Quemix specializes in algorithms for fault-tolerant quantum computing and computational materials science. The company holds patents for Probabilistic Imaginary-Time Evolution, a quantum chemistry calculation algorithm with mathematically proven acceleration, and is targeting full commercial applicability in materials simulation by 2030.
Automotive manufacturers continue to be active early adopters of quantum computing for electrochemistry and battery simulation. Honda’s direct equity stake in Quemix deepens their technical alignment and signals a shift from exploratory joint research toward integrating domain-specific quantum software directly into industrial materials development workflows.
