IBM Deploys Quantum System Two at Hyde Park Labs to Anchor Illinois Quantum Ecosystem

IBM (NYSE: IBM), the University of Chicago, the State of Illinois, and the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) have unveiled an on-premises IBM Quantum System Two in Chicago. Initially operational at Hyde Park Labs and hosted by the University of Chicago, the deployment represents IBM’s first physical quantum computer installed in Illinois. The system is powered by IBM’s flagship Quantum Nighthawk processor architecture and serves as the anchor hardware platform for the National Quantum Algorithm Center (NQAC) before permanently relocating to the dedicated IQMP campus upon completion of construction.

The on-premises installation transitions Chicago researchers from remote cloud access to local, dedicated hardware execution. Powered by Nighthawk’s high circuit-repetition rates and square-lattice connectivity, the deployment provides Illinois-based collaborators with the low-latency runtime necessary to execute deep, error-mitigated circuits and algorithm-scaling benchmarks. The system directly anchors ongoing NQAC Grand Challenges projects, including collaborative drug-discovery molecular modeling conducted by Deloitte, AbbVie, IBM, and Northwestern University, as well as power-grid optimization workflows developed alongside EPRI and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

The system also bolsters fundamental physics workflows with national laboratories, including Fermilab’s research into distributed quantum computing architectures and high-energy physics simulations. In parallel with hardware scaling, IBM announced the integration of the FutureNow Chicago center at IQMP in partnership with City Colleges of Chicago, aiming to train local practitioners and support 750 regional technology jobs across quantum computing, cybersecurity, and data science.
