IBM Expands Quantum and AI Footprint with Chicago Hub and MIT Research Lab

IBM has announced a major dual expansion of its technology ecosystem, launching the FutureNow Chicago delivery center at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) and transitioning its long-standing academic partnership into the new MIT-IBM Computing Research Lab. The Chicago initiative will create 750 new full-time jobs in AI, cybersecurity, data science, and quantum computing. Meanwhile, the Cambridge-based research lab will expand its mission beyond foundational AI to explore the convergence of quantum algorithms and hybrid computing systems, targeting breakthroughs in materials science, chemistry, and biology.

In Illinois, IBM will serve as an anchor tenant in the IQMP’s Quantum Works building, a facility designed to connect local South Side residents with high-growth technology careers. To support this, IBM has committed to a workforce development program with City Colleges of Chicago, pledging to hire one-third of the graduates from a new 500-person apprenticeship initiative over the next five years. This “Chicago Moonshot” model aims to transform paid apprenticeships into a scalable pathway for upward mobility, ensuring that the projected $20 billion economic impact of the IQMP is shared broadly across the region’s diverse communities.

Simultaneously, the MIT-IBM Computing Research Lab marks a decade of collaboration by pivoting toward quantum-centric supercomputing. The lab will focus on rethinking the mathematical foundations of machine learning, Hamiltonian simulations, and partial differential equations—tools essential for modeling dynamical systems that currently exceed classical computational limits. This research is expected to yield more accurate weather predictions, financial market forecasts, and optimized global supply chains by tightly integrating quantum hardware with AI accelerators and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.

The MIT-IBM lab is co-led by experts in three distinct focus areas: AI, algorithms, and quantum. Key research goals include the development of small, efficient modular language models and novel quantum algorithms for drug discovery and protein structure prediction. The lab also serves as a critical training ground, engaging faculty and students across MIT departments to accelerate discoveries in the physical and life sciences. This evolution builds on the legacy of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, which has funded over 210 projects and produced 1,500 peer-reviewed articles since 2017.

These announcements underscore IBM’s roadmap to deliver the world’s first fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. By positioning Chicago as a hub for commercial delivery and MIT as a center for algorithmic innovation, IBM is bridging the gap between theoretical research and mainstream enterprise deployment. As Governor JB Pritzker noted, the establishment of the National Quantum Algorithm Center and the arrival of the IBM Quantum System Two in Illinois solidify the state’s status as a global leader in the emerging quantum economy.
