IBM Improves Qubit Reset by 25x and Releases Qiskit v2.5

IBM has announced two major advancements this past week, spanning both its quantum hardware and software ecosystems.

Hardware: 25x Faster Qubit Resets

On the hardware front, IBM achieved a 25x speed improvement for qubit resetting on its latest processor. Rapid reset times are critical after a circuit finishes executing, as they prepare the machine for the next run. The faster this occurs, the more circuits the system can execute per second.

To quantify this efficiency, IBM introduced a new metric called Max Circuits per Second (MCPS). The company claims that for short circuits, MCPS has jumped from roughly 4,000 to 100,000. This 25x increase will significantly boost overall system throughput.

Accelerated reset times also enhance mid-circuit measurements. This capability allows a system to run part of a computation, measure a qubit mid-stream, and immediately reset it for reuse later in the same execution—a technique expected to be foundational for quantum error correction.

IBM has deployed this feature on its latest 120-qubit Nighthawk r2 processor. Thanks to the architecture’s tunable couplers, each qubit can be reset rapidly and independently without disrupting neighboring qubits. Furthermore, IBM’s internal testing shows an 11x reduction in initialization error rates.

Software: Qiskit v2.5 Launch

IBM’s second announcement marks the release of Qiskit version 2.5, which delivers enhanced performance, greater flexibility, and several new features to the open-source software platform.

Key highlights of the v2.5 release include:

  • C API Classical Control Flow: Enables direct inspection from C of the classical control flow instructions used in dynamic circuits.
  • Multi-IR Compilations: Introduces abstractions that allow users to build compilation pipelines utilizing multiple, distinct Intermediate Representations (IR).
  • Fault-Tolerant Pipelines: Features dedicated fault-tolerant pipelines with preset pass managers, simplifying compilation to Pauli-Based Computation (PBC) and Clifford+T representations for fault-tolerant workflows.
  • Faster Transpilation: Accelerates transpilation via algorithmic improvements, software optimizations, expanded multithreading, and new fidelity-focused passes.

Rebranding Notice

Alongside the software release, IBM announced it is renaming the Qiskit Runtime Service to the IBM Quantum Compute Service. While there are no technical changes associated with this rebranding, IBM introduced the new name to clearly differentiate its commercial cloud service from the open-source Qiskit software development kit (SDK).
