IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) and the University of Maryland (UMD) have announced a $7.5 million expansion of their partnership through the National Quantum Laboratory (QLab). Supported by the State of Maryland’s Capital of Quantum Initiative, this multi-year agreement builds upon a strategic collaboration first established in 2024. The expansion is designed to accelerate access to advanced hardware and foster workforce development, reinforcing the region’s position as a primary hub for quantum information science and commercialization.
A central component of the new agreement is the deployment of IonQ’s first silicon vacancy (SiV)-based quantum memory node. This hardware will serve as a testbed for UMD researchers to develop and test new networking applications directly on IonQ’s interconnect platform. The infrastructure is intended to complement existing regional efforts, such as the Mid-Atlantic Region Quantum Internet (MARQI) network. By integrating industry-leading memory systems with academic research, the partnership seeks to bridge the gap between fundamental physics and the commercialization of next-generation quantum communication.
The expanded collaboration also includes increased compute access to IonQ’s trapped-ion systems and joint research projects focused on quantum machine learning and holographic error-correcting codes. Additionally, the two entities will co-develop specialized laser hardware to support advanced experiments in quantum thermodynamics. Beyond technical milestones, the QLab expansion emphasizes hands-on training for students, providing direct experience with commercial-grade quantum architectures and emerging networking protocols to prepare a specialized workforce for the maturing quantum economy.
