IonQ Secures $5M Maryland Grant for Global Headquarters Construction

The Maryland Board of Public Works has approved a $5 million grant for IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) to support the design and construction of its global headquarters in College Park. Funded through the Seed Community Development Anchor Institution Fund as part of the state’s 2026 Capital Budget, the award is a centerpiece of Governor Wes Moore’s “Capital of Quantum” initiative. The grant targets the capital equipping and site improvement of the approximately 100,000-square-foot facility, which serves as IonQ’s primary hub for trapped-ion quantum hardware manufacturing and research.

The investment reinforces Maryland’s strategy to establish the state as a dominant global cluster for quantum innovation. By designating IonQ as a “Seed Anchor Institution,” the state aims to catalyze long-term economic growth and high-tech job creation within the National Capital region. This funding follows the company’s continued expansion in the state, leveraging its proximity to the University of Maryland to bridge academic research with industrial-scale quantum production.

This grant is part of a broader $69.5 million statewide community revitalization package intended to strengthen local economies and support infrastructure-grade technological advancements. For IonQ, the capital infusion directly supports the specialized engineering requirements of housing next-generation quantum systems, including the utility-scale IonQ Tempo. The project aligns with state goals to repair disparities through targeted investment in “Just Communities” and competitive economic development programs.
