Tier-1 network provider Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) has announced initiatives targeting quantum network transport and enterprise post-quantum cryptographic migration. The deployment pairs an academic research partnership with The Ohio State University (OSU) to evaluate non-classical light transmission across commercial optical fiber with a product roadmap update integrating Fortinet’s post-quantum cryptography (PQC) into Lumen’s managed Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution.

Connecting geographically separated quantum computing clusters presents a physical challenge: the quantum no-cloning theorem prohibits the use of standard erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) to boost optical signals, leaving fiber loss and polarization drift as severe transmission ceilings. Lumen’s research funding with Ohio State will assess how commercial, field-deployed fiber bundles handle non-classical photonic states, establishing empirical channel bounds for optical repeaters and dispersion management. Concurrently, the project tests distributed quantum sensing techniques, using optical noise backscatter to detect environmental fluctuations and seismic anomalies that degrade physical fiber health.
At the software layer, Lumen is addressing harvest-now, decrypt-later (HNDL) exfiltration risks by embedding Fortinet’s PQC libraries—standardized under FIPS 203 (ML-KEM) and FIPS 204 (ML-DSA)—directly into its SASE edge infrastructure. The integrated service aims to give enterprise customers a crypto-agile path to transition corporate wide-area networks away from vulnerable RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography without overhauling underlying hardware. Alongside these efforts, Lumen also announced an exploratory pilot with Emerald AI to dynamically steer AI compute workloads across its network based on power grid availability.
Technical and commercial program details are documented in the official Lumen Announcement here.
