Maybell Quantum Deploys Dilution Refrigerators at Roadrunner Quantum Lab

Cryogenic infrastructure provider Maybell Quantum has announced a hardware and operational expansion into New Mexico, becoming the third major quantum equipment manufacturer to anchor the state’s Roadrunner Quantum Lab (RQL). Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Maybell will deploy a fleet of four dilution refrigerators at the Albuquerque-based facility, providing the ultra-low millikelvin temperatures essential for running superconducting and spin-qubit quantum processors.

The deployment forms a core part of New Mexico’s $450 million statewide quantum initiative, backed by an initial $25 million public-private partnership established in August 2025 between Economic Development New Mexico and Roadrunner Venture Studios.

Lowering Cryogenic Capital Expenditure Barriers

Acquiring and configuring high-performance dilution refrigerators remains one of the largest capital barriers for early-stage quantum hardware startups, often consuming years of lead time and millions of dollars in seed capital. Maybell’s multi-tenant setup at RQL is engineered to allow up to five distinct startup teams—comprising 20 to 30 researchers simultaneously—to access shared cryogenic infrastructure, control electronics, and networking equipment without building dedicated lab facilities.

Key operational highlights from the deployment include:

  • Installation Timeline: Onsite setup of all four dilution refrigerators is scheduled for completion by September 2026, with researchers expected to begin utilizing the hardware immediately upon calibration.
  • Shared Capital Model: The cryogenic fleet is financed through a combined investment model, with a portion of the fridges purchased directly by Roadrunner Venture Studios and the remainder supplied by Maybell.
  • Local Team & Ecosystem Support: Maybell is hiring local engineering and technical staff in Albuquerque to manage lab operations, assist customer integration, and recruit new startup tenants.

Building a Full-Stack Public Testing Environment

With Maybell’s cryogenic systems joining Qunnect’s open-access quantum networking loop and QuEra Computing’s $4 million neutral-atom testbed, RQL now provides a complete full-stack testing environment. Startups, regional universities, and researchers from Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of New Mexico have begun utilizing the facility’s centralized resources ahead of its formal public opening scheduled for the fall.

The expansion comes as Maybell scales its internal manufacturing lines to meet global hardware demand from research institutions, hyperscalers, and national laboratories across more than a dozen countries.
