NASA Awards Infleqtion $20M Follow-On Contract for Quantum Gravity Gradiometer Pathfinder Mission

Infleqtion (NYSE: INFQ) has received a $20 million follow-on contract from NASA to advance the Quantum Gravity Gradiometer Pathfinder (QGGPf) mission, led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The award brings total NASA funding for the space-based quantum gravity sensing program to $40 million, moving the mission into its next phase of hardware integration, sub-system fabrication, and microgravity ground testing.

Ultracold Neutral-Atom Physics Package and Testing Pipeline

Building upon heritage technologies developed for NASA’s Cold Atom Lab (CAL) aboard the International Space Station and previous satellite gravity mapping platforms (GRACE and GRACE-FO), QGGPf applies atom interferometry to measure subtle variations in Earth’s gravitational field:

  • Atomic Physics Package: Infleqtion is responsible for the design, maturation, and assembly of the sensor’s core atomic physics engine. The package integrates vacuum chambers, laser optics, and control electronics engineered to cool rubidium atoms down to pico-Kelvin scale temperatures.
  • Microgravity Ground Verification: Under the contract extension, Infleqtion will build an Engineering Development Unit (EDU) comprising the sensor head and flight electronics. The unit will undergo drop-tower testing at the Einstein Elevator microgravity facility in Hannover, Germany, to evaluate quantum gravity gradient measurements under simulated spaceflight conditions.
  • Earth Observation Applications: Future space-grade quantum gravity sensors derived from the pathfinder aim to deliver high-resolution mapping of underground water tables, polar ice sheet movement, mineral deposits, and subterranean structural shifts.

Program Timeline and Flight Roadmap

The $20 million contract extension funds engineering work through 2027. NASA and Infleqtion plan to complete full instrument hardware development over the next three years, targeting a low-Earth orbit (LEO) flight demonstration launch in 2030. The mission forms a key component of NASA’s space-based quantum sensing portfolio, advancing neutral-atom instruments from laboratory and ISS-bound payloads to dedicated satellite constellations.
