Quantum hardware spin-out Photon Queue has closed an oversubscribed $4 million seed funding round led by Palo Alto-based deep-tech venture firm Playground Global. Additional investors in the round include Cerberus Capital Management, Illinois Ventures, Roadrunner Venture Studios, and MFV Partners.
Spun out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2024, the Champaign-based startup builds room-temperature quantum memory systems designed to eliminate optical synchronization bottlenecks as quantum processing units (QPUs) scale toward networked, multi-chip architectures.

Resolving Photonic Synchronization Without Cryogenics
As quantum architectures—spanning photonic, trapped-ion, neutral-atom, and superconducting QPUs—scale up, connecting discrete processing nodes requires routing single photons with exact sub-nanosecond timing precision. Traditional quantum memory candidates often require complex optical frequency transduction, deep cryogenic cooling, or ultra-high vacuum systems.
Photon Queue addresses this challenge using a free-space, linear-optics approach:
- Free-Space Optical Storage Loops: The hardware stores photons directly by routing them through proprietary, high-reflectivity mirror configurations and low-loss optical switches, holding the optical signal until downstream gates or detectors are ready.
- Ambient Operating Footprint: Operating at room temperature using standard electrical power, the devices eliminate the need for liquid helium cryostat infrastructure or vacuum chambers.
- Broad Wavelength Compatibility: The free-space architecture supports arbitrary optical wavelengths, allowing it to interface directly with diverse physical qubit backends, quantum sensing arrays, and optical communications networks.
Commercial Deployments and Dual-Hub Operations
The seed capital will accelerate product manufacturing and support growing commercial deployments, including initial hardware deliveries to Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Maryland (part of the NSF Center for Quantum Networks).
The funding round also builds on the company’s dual-hub strategy:
- Midwest Engineering Anchor: As a graduate of the Duality Quantum Accelerator and a member of the Chicago Quantum Exchange, Photon Queue continues to expand its core hardware engineering lines within the Illinois quantum ecosystem.
- Southwest Manufacturing Expansion: Supported by a recent $500,000 package from the New Mexico Economic Development Department and Roadrunner Venture Studios, the company is establishing an assembly, testing, and verification line inside the Roadrunner Quantum Lab in Albuquerque to deepen its research collaborations with Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories.
