Delft-based quantum communications developer Q*Bird has officially transitioned into Falqon Systems, adopting a unified corporate identity to support its expansion from hardware component manufacturing to deploying end-to-end Quantum Secure Networks (QSN). Originating as a spinout from QuTech and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in 2022, the company’s ownership structure, leadership team under CEO Dr. Ingrid Romijn, existing customer contracts, and technological roadmaps remain unchanged.
The rebranding consolidates the company’s product matrix under the Falqon umbrella, which combines hardware devices, key lifecycle management, and network orchestration software into an integrated platform. The core architecture is built upon Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD). Unlike traditional point-to-point QKD protocols, MDI-QKD routes quantum signals through a central untrusted hub, eliminating detector-side channel attack vectors and allowing multi-node star topologies to share cryptographic keys without exposing raw keys at the central junction.

Falqon Systems currently maintains operational deployments across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Austria, and Spain—including the Madrid Quantum Communication Infrastructure (MadQCI) network operated in partnership with Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Engineered and manufactured in Europe, the platform aligns with European digital sovereignty objectives under the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative. The underlying MDI-QKD network architecture is designed to scale beyond cryptographic key exchange to support long-term quantum internet applications, including quantum interconnects, distributed quantum computing, and networked quantum sensors.
