Thales Introduces Luna 8 Hardware Security Module for Post-Quantum Encryption

French cybersecurity and defense technology firm Thales has launched Luna 8, a next-generation hardware security module (HSM) designed to safeguard enterprise cryptographic infrastructure against emerging quantum decryption threats and high-throughput AI workloads. Powered by a custom-designed Thales cryptographic processor, the hardware appliance provides high-speed key management, digital signing, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) protection, and cryptographic agility to support post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithm migrations.

The deployment directly addresses vulnerabilities highlighted in the 2026 Thales Data Threat Report, which surveyed 3,120 IT and security professionals globally. According to the report, 61% of respondents cited “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” (HNDL) attacks as their primary quantum concern—where adversaries intercept and store encrypted data traffic today to decrypt once cryptographically relevant quantum computers become available. Consequently, 59% of surveyed organizations reported that they are actively prototyping and evaluating PQC algorithms to prepare for post-quantum standards.

Luna 8 incorporates several technical and operational features engineered to support enterprise PQC integration:

  • Cryptographic Agility: Built with an upgradeable architecture, the platform enables organizations to introduce new NIST-finalized post-quantum algorithms and security parameters via firmware updates without replacing underlying physical hardware or disrupting existing applications.
  • Performance & Scalability: Delivers accelerated cryptographic operations designed to handle high-density transaction processing, cloud management infrastructure, and automated AI data pipelines.
  • Infrastructure Portability: Preserves backwards compatibility with previous-generation Thales Luna HSM interfaces and ancillaries, enabling migration paths for existing enterprise deployments.
  • Standards Compliance: The network appliance is undergoing independent security evaluations for high-assurance certifications, including FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and European Union Common Criteria. Future software updates will also support the payShield 11K environment for payment transaction security across banking networks.

The launch expands Thales’ cryptographic hardware portfolio alongside its ongoing ecosystem initiatives, including its work with the Quantum-Safe 360 Alliance and its joint PQC evaluation tools developed with Quantinuum. Early deployment partners, including digital asset platform HKVAX, are using Luna 8 to isolate key management environments while migrating core security architectures to quantum-resistant standards.
