TNO Invests in Irish Quantum Startup Equal1 to Strengthen Dutch Quantum Ecosystem

TNO, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, has announced its first-ever investment in Equal1, an Irish quantum startup expanding its operations in the Netherlands. This move reinforces the Netherlands’ position as a global hub for quantum technology, a key focus of the National Technology Strategy. TNO’s investment, made through its private holding company, includes technical expertise to accelerate the scaling of Equal1’s quantum computing technology.

Equal1, founded in 2018 as a spin-off from University College Dublin, develops full-stack quantum computers using silicon spin qubits, a technology co-developed by TNO and Delft University of Technology. Last November, we reported in the QCR that Equal1 and TNO agreed to collaborate to have TNO fabricate of Equal1’s spin qubit devices The startup is relocating part of its R&D activities to Delft, leveraging TNO’s expertise in nanofabrication, advanced materials, and quantum infrastructure. Equal1 aims to build rack-mounted quantum computers capable of scaling to millions of qubits, targeting applications in climate modeling, financial modeling, and AI.

“This investment aligns with our strategy to support deep-tech startups and strengthen the Dutch high-tech ecosystem,” said Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of TNO. Jason Lynch, CEO of Equal1, emphasized the partnership’s role in accelerating the development of scalable, energy-efficient quantum computers.
