The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science has launched a $625 million funding opportunity to support National Quantum Information Science Research Centers. These multi-institutional, multidisciplinary centers aim to accelerate breakthroughs in quantum information science (QIS), supporting the National Quantum Initiative Act. The initiative will focus on quantum communications, computing, simulation, devices, sensors, and materials, with the goal of developing world-leading capabilities in QIS.
Each center will integrate basic research, engineering, and technology development to deliver prototype quantum platforms and scientific breakthroughs. Proposals must be led by DOE national laboratories, with other institutions participating as subawardees. DOE is expected to make five awards for $125 million each with an award period of five years. Pre-proposals are due by March 12, 2025, and full proposals by June 4, 2025.
This investment underscores the DOE’s commitment to advancing quantum technologies, which are critical for scientific discovery, national competitiveness, and addressing global challenges in energy, computing, and communication.
