UK Government Opens £9.5 Million ($12.35 Million USD) Quantum Funding Competition for Quantum Computing and Quantum Networking Projects

Innovate UK, a division of UK Research and Innovation, has launched a funding competition with up to £9.5 million ($12.35 million USD) available for Quantum Computing (QC) and Quantum Networks (QN) projects. This initiative aims to propel QC and QN technologies by overcoming key technological challenges that limit their commercial use, in line with the UK National Quantum Strategy’s objectives.

UK-based businesses are eligible to apply, and each project must target one or more specific technical barriers, proposing innovative solutions to address them. Eligible QC projects should focus on hardware development, with an emphasis on integrating QC and QN technologies, such as networked quantum computers to advance data processing. Funding for QC projects ranges from £1 million ($1.3 million USD) to £3 million ($3.9 million USD), while QN projects are eligible for up to £1 million ($1.3 million USD).

The competition is open until December 11, 2024, with a virtual briefing session scheduled for November 14. This briefing will provide applicants with detailed guidance on application requirements and the program’s goals. This funding effort underscores the UK’s commitment to building a strong quantum ecosystem, supporting technology adoption, and accelerating quantum technology’s role in solving complex challenges across sectors.

For full eligibility criteria and application guidelines, interested parties can access the competition page on Innovate UK’s website here.
