IQM Quantum Computers has announced plans to construct an industrial production unit for quantum computers and chips during the Choose France summit in Paris. This facility, to be located in France, will feature a high-throughput production process for large-scale quantum processors, a first of its kind in Europe. It will complement IQM’s existing fabrication facility in Espoo, Finland. The project’s first stage will involve the development of fabrication steps in pilot line mode within CEA-Leti in Grenoble.
In an interview with Dr. Jan Goetz, Co-CEO of IQM, he explained that the decision to work with CEA-Leti is motivated by the desire to take advantage of the new fabrication capabilities, particularly in advanced packaging. These will be needed as the company continues to develop larger and more complex chips. Initially, process engineers at CEA-Leti will work with IQM’s process engineers while IQM installs it own facility in the Grenoble, France area. The intent is to have that new facility ready in 2027 at which time the technology will be transferred to it for further development. IQM continues to have a team in Munich, Germany that is working on algorithms and error correction techniques. They also have been working with the University of California, Berkeley to share knowledge about ways to improve qubit quality and coherence.
Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire and Secretary General for Investments Bruno Bonnell have expressed support for the initiative, highlighting its importance in shaping the future of Europe’s quantum industry. IQM’s commitment aligns with France’s quantum strategy and wider European initiatives. This announcement underscores IQM’s vision to advance quantum computing from the laboratory to the industrial scale, positioning itself at the forefront of innovation.
