Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute Acquires IQM Spark Quantum Computer to Accelerate R&D

The Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) has announced its first procurement of a full-stack quantum computer, selecting the IQM Spark, a 5-qubit superconducting system. The installation, set for the second quarter of 2025, will bolster Taiwan’s quantum technology development by integrating IQM’s expertise in hardware and fostering research and educational opportunities.

The collaboration aims to leverage TSRI’s advanced semiconductor capabilities, including low-temperature CMOS technologies critical for scaling quantum processors and enabling error correction. This acquisition also signifies Taiwan’s strategic move to connect its robust semiconductor industry with emerging quantum technologies, laying a foundation for talent cultivation and academic-industrial collaboration.

IQM, a global leader in superconducting quantum systems, views the deal as a significant milestone in its expansion into the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Mikko Välimäki, Co-CEO of IQM, highlighted Taiwan’s leadership in semiconductors, positioning this partnership as a catalyst for advancing the local quantum ecosystem.

The partnership underscores TSRI’s dedication to advancing Taiwan’s semiconductor capabilities while fostering international collaboration in quantum research. This step marks a pivotal development in aligning Taiwan’s semiconductor expertise with global quantum innovation trends.
