Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and IBM entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on May 10, 2024, aimed at advancing the industrialization of quantum technology in Japan. The collaboration seeks to bolster Japan’s quantum computer parts and equipment industry by jointly developing next-generation quantum computers and enhancing their supply chains. IBM plans to integrate Japanese industries into the procurement processes for future quantum computing system components, while also partnering with AIST to foster supplier development.
According to unconfirmed press reports, the collaboration will include development of a 10,000 qubit machine by 2029. Neither company has officially announced this yet, but that timeline would line up with the planned introduction of IBM’s Starling system that IBM showed in their quantum roadmap update last December.
By promoting the practical application of quantum computing in various industries, both organizations aim to catalyze growth within Japan’s quantum sector and cultivate a robust ecosystem focused on business value creation.
