IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a commercial quantum computing and networking company, has announced the issuance of new U.S. patents, bringing its total intellectual property (IP) portfolio to over 1,000 assets. The total of 1,060 patents includes licensed, owned, or controlled granted patents and pending patent applications as of August 2025, and incorporates IP from companies such as Lightsynq Technologies, ID Quantique (IDQ), and Oxford Ionics (pending acquisition).

The announcement highlights two recent patents that build on IonQ’s technical achievements. Patent US 12,260,113, “Portable Quantum Memory Package for Quantum Network Nodes,” relates to quantum repeaters that use quantum memories to store and connect photons for secure, long-distance quantum communication networks. Patent US 12,265,254, “Self-Aligned Fabrication Process for Coupling of Photonic Waveguide,” relates to a self-aligning fabrication process for transporting light and coupling photonic layers in quantum memory devices. This process is designed to achieve nanometer-scale alignment of multiple photonic materials without the need for finely tuned alignment procedures.

The expanding patent portfolio is positioned to support IonQ’s strategy of developing and owning quantum technologies across multiple industries and applications. These patents contribute to IonQ’s efforts in advancing the fundamental building blocks of quantum systems, from precision control to scalable architectures. The company’s recent acquisitions are also noted for broadening the scope of its IP portfolio, which is intended to lay the groundwork for future generations of quantum systems.
