Arqit Quantum Inc., Qatar satellite operator Es’hailSat, and systems integrator Advanced International Electronic Equipment Company (AIEE) have completed a live demonstration of quantum-safe encryption across operational satellite communications infrastructure. Conducted at Es’hailSat’s Tier-4 certified Teleport facility in Doha, the trial integrated Arqit’s quantum-safe software across existing satellite links provided by the Es’hail-1 satellite at the 25.5°/26° East orbital hotspot. The demonstration verified that post-quantum cryptographic protections can be implemented over active satellite networks without requiring hardware replacements or disrupting live operational performance.

Integration and Operational Architecture

The project focused on validating a non-disruptive pathway to secure critical data links against emerging threats from cryptographically relevant quantum computers. Es’hailSat provided the operational satellite link via Es’hail-1, while AIEE managed the systems integration and interoperability testing across the ground station and network infrastructure. Arqit’s NetworkSecure™ and Symmetric Key Agreement (SKA) platform were deployed directly into the existing operational environment, establishing quantum-safe symmetric keys to protect data in transit. The architecture demonstrated compatibility with standard satellite-connected networks serving government, enterprise, maritime, and energy sectors.

Strategic Context and Deployment Roadmap

The demonstration addresses growing concerns surrounding long-life orbital and critical infrastructure assets vulnerable to “harvest now, decrypt later” strategies. By confirming that software-based post-quantum encryption can be retrofitted onto existing space and ground assets, the partners established a blueprint for sovereign communications resilience across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This trial forms a foundation for future commercial deployments designed to secure critical infrastructure and enterprise data links without capital-intensive “rip-and-replace” overhauls of established satellite networks.
