Infineon and ZuriQ Deepen Partnership to Industrialize 2D Trapped-Ion Penning Micro-Trap Chips

Semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and Swiss quantum hardware startup ZuriQ AG have expanded their strategic technology partnership to scale trapped-ion quantum processing units (QPUs). Spun out of ETH Zurich in 2024, ZuriQ combines its two-dimensional Penning micro-trap QPU designs with Infineon’s industrial semiconductor fabrication, advanced micro-packaging, and integrated photonics manufacturing capabilities.

Unlike standard 1D linear ion chains that rely on radio-frequency (RF) Paul traps and complex physical shuttling junctions, ZuriQ’s architecture utilizes a natively two-dimensional grid powered by static electromagnetic fields. In recent development cycles, ZuriQ and Infineon validated the micro-trap platform by trapping a 3×3 array of nine individually controlled ion qubits, marking the largest 2D Penning trap array demonstrated to date. Eliminating RF heating constraints allows ZuriQ’s micro-traps to be fabricated on standard commercial semiconductor lines, simplifying chip routing for high-density 2D qubit scaling.

The joint scaling effort builds upon ZuriQ’s $25.5 million (€22.4M) seed round completed in July 2026, which was led by Quantonation. By integrating on-chip optical waveguides and precision micro-electrodes directly into Infineon’s industrial packaging processes, the partnership aims to deliver scalable, manufacturable hardware for fault-tolerant quantum computing across materials science, logistics, and healthcare applications.
