Quantum-enabled optical sensing startup Diffraqtion has closed an expanded pre-seed financing round totaling over $10 million. The round welcomed strategic investments from Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures (the venture capital arm of Sumitomo Corporation), joining existing backers including Ground State Ventures, SBI US Gateway Fund (with Plug and Play), Collaborative Fund, TekVentures, Aether VC, milemark•capital, and ADIN.

Sub-Diffraction Resolution via Spatial Light-Shape Measurement

An MIT and University of Maryland spinout headquartered in Somerville, Massachusetts, Diffraqtion develops sub-diffraction-limit quantum camera platforms. Conventional optical systems are physically bounded by the diffraction limit, requiring progressively larger apertures to resolve distant objects. Diffraqtion circumvents this aperture bottleneck by capturing photon properties directly in the optical domain:

  • Light-Shape Sorting: Instead of relying on traditional pixel arrays that only measure photon intensity (brightness), the camera’s passive photonic hardware sorts incoming light by its spatial mode and shape before conversion.
  • Passive Quantum Estimation: Drawing on quantum estimation theory and spatial light control rather than quantum computing algorithms, the platform operates entirely without qubits or cryogenic cooling infrastructure.
  • Performance Benchmarks: Company simulations demonstrate the ability to resolve features up to 20 times smaller than conventional optics while executing target classification orders of magnitude faster using low-power onboard photonic inference.

Federal Traction, Flight Heritage, and Strategic Operations

The capital expansion follows a seven-month period of technical validation. Diffraqtion completed on-sky terrestrial observatory demonstrations distinguishing closely spaced objects, advanced its DARPA Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR into its second option period, secured a NASA Phase I SBIR for orbital debris tracking, and won NASA’s $100,000 Space to Soil Challenge for adaptive onboard processing.

Led by CEO and Co-Founder Johannes Galatsanos, the company has appointed former E Ink and QD Vision executive Peter Kazlas as Head of Engineering to lead the transition into volume hardware manufacturing. The newly secured funds will support the construction of Diffraqtion’s first fielded quantum camera, scheduled to achieve orbital flight heritage via a hosted payload on a partner spacecraft to serve space domain awareness (SDA) and defense reconnaissance missions.
