The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has approved the creation of a new Technical Committee on Quantum Technologies (TC QT). The committee’s primary objective is to develop specifications that address quantum communications and quantum networks across multiple sectors, with a goal of establishing standards for secure global communications networks.
The TC QT will focus on several key areas of activity, including quantum communications, quantum networking, quantum sensing, and satellite quantum communications. The committee will also work on standardization for Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) and will establish methodologies to assess hardware vulnerabilities and side-channel attack risks for quantum security. The group aims to support European policy objectives, including contributions to the European Quantum Act and the European Chips Act.
The creation of the TC QT is intended to support the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI), reinforcing ETSI’s position as a key player in Europe’s quantum strategy. The committee will engage with European and international standards organizations to promote alignment and integrate research outcomes from frameworks such as Horizon Europe.
