Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, ParityQC, and NXP Semiconductors Germany have launched PraktiQOM, a collaborative project aimed at achieving practical quantum advantages for complex optimization problems. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space as part of the “Application-Oriented Quantum Computing” initiative, the project will run through October 2028. The research focuses on the semiconductor industry, specifically targeting the highly complex “floor planning” stage of chip design, where components must be arranged to optimize area, connectivity, and performance.
The technical strategy of PraktiQOM involves a multifaceted approach to algorithm development, seeking to transfer exponential advantages from quantum cryptography to optimization tasks. The project aims to enhance the efficiency of Grover’s algorithm and integrate ParityQC’s Parity Twine technology. By utilizing the Parity Code for error correction, the consortium intends to achieve at least a tenfold improvement in both execution runtime and the total number of qubits required compared to conventional quantum error correction methods.
Within the collaboration, NXP Semiconductors provides industrial use cases and real-world design challenges to ensure the research remains grounded in practical requirements. ParityQC is responsible for the architectural implementation, using its Parity Flow methodology to optimize algorithms for specific hardware constraints. The project’s final objective is to deliver a series of “quantum solvers”—tailored algorithms designed for specific classes of real-world problems with a clear path toward future commercialization in the semiconductor and IT sectors.
