S-Transistors Raises €2.6 Million ($3 Million USD) Pre-Seed Round to Build Superconducting Quantum Control Motherboards

Finnish deep-tech startup S-Transistors—a spin-off from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland—has raised €2.6 million ($3M USD) in pre-seed funding. Led by Nordic venture firm Lifeline Ventures with participation from angel investors, the capital will fund the construction of a pilot manufacturing line, a dedicated cryogenic laboratory, product prototyping, and team expansion. The company is pioneering wafer-scale superconducting transistors designed to operate at millikelvin (mK) temperatures to solve the physical wiring and thermal dissipation bottlenecks limiting large-scale quantum computers.

Overcoming the Cryogenic Cabling and Thermal Bottleneck

Co-founded by CEO Dr. Heorhii Bohuslavskyi and CTO Dr. Andrey Generalov, S-Transistors addresses the architectural scaling limits of cryogenically cooled processors (such as superconducting and silicon spin qubit QPUs). Current systems rely on individual coaxial cables running from room-temperature electronics down to the quantum processor inside the cryostat—a configuration that introduces severe thermal heat loads and physical spatial constraints as QPU counts scale toward thousands of qubits.

  • In-Cryostat Control Integration: While conventional silicon CMOS transistors can function at cryogenic temperatures, their power dissipation generates excess thermal noise that degrades delicate qubit coherence times. S-Transistors’ platform combines transistor switching capabilities with the near-zero electrical resistance and low power dissipation of superconductors.
  • First Product Commercialization: The company’s initial commercial product is a wafer-scale, superconducting-transistor-based cryogenic multiplexer. Designed to plug directly into existing dilution refrigerators, the component reduces the required cable count by routing multiple qubit control signals internally. S-Transistors plans to ship the device to early partners within its first year.
  • The “Quantum Motherboard” Vision: The multiplexer serves as the initial building block toward a unified millikelvin control motherboard—a complete integrated classical processing plane operating adjacent to the QPU inside the cryostat.

Broad Industry Applications

Beyond quantum processing units, the company’s patent-pending fabrication technology offers applications across classical high-performance computing (HPC), deep-space spacecraft electronics, artificial intelligence acceleration hardware, and high-sensitivity particle detectors.
