Photonic quantum hardware provider Xanadu Quantum Technologies Limited (NASDAQ/TSX: XNDU) has announced a multi-year strategic manufacturing partnership with semiconductor foundry GlobalFoundries (GF). The collaboration marks a transition from lab-scale prototyping to industrial high-volume production, transferring Xanadu’s photonic hardware design processes onto GF’s 300 mm commercial semiconductor fabrication facility in Malta, New York.
The primary manufacturing focus centers on scaling two foundational components of Xanadu’s fault-tolerant photonic architecture: ultra-low loss Silicon Nitride (SiN) optical circuits and Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors (SNSPDs). In photonic quantum computing, ultra-low loss SiN waveguides function as optical circuit boards to route single photons across light spectra without signal degradation, while SNSPDs act as high-efficiency Photon Number Resolving (PNR) detectors to read output states. Mass-producing integrated SNSPDs on 300 mm wafers is engineered to increase execution clock speeds while reducing the physical component overhead required for fault-tolerant photonic quantum processing units (QPUs).
