IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has announced an expanded strategic agreement with QuantumBasel, the quantum initiative of Switzerland’s uptownBasel innovation campus. The new contract, which extends the partnership through 2029, brings the total deal value to over $60 million and solidifies QuantumBasel as IonQ’s primary Innovation Center in Europe.
Under the terms of the expanded agreement, QuantumBasel will transition to full ownership of its existing IonQ Forte Enterprise system and has secured future ownership of a next-generation IonQ Tempo system. The Tempo system is a key milestone in IonQ’s roadmap toward fault-tolerant computing, designed to support deeper quantum circuits and higher-fidelity operations required for commercial-scale applications in finance, drug discovery, and logistics.
The partnership also includes an expansion of collaborative research workstreams. IonQ and QuantumBasel will focus on optimizing Large Language Models (LLMs) and developing hybrid quantum-classical techniques. These efforts aim to enhance AI model performance and explore novel algorithmic frameworks to unlock near-term commercial value for European industry and research institutions.
This expansion follows a year of significant technical and corporate growth for IonQ in 2025, which included:
- Technical Record: Achieving a world-record 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity using its proprietary Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) technology.
- European Consolidation: Strengthening its EU footprint through the acquisitions of Oxford Ionics in the UK and a controlling stake in ID Quantique in Switzerland, as well as the establishment of IonQ Italia.
- Roadmap Acceleration: Advancing toward its stated goal of delivering systems with 2 million physical qubits by 2030.
