Beijing-based quantum hardware startup FlipFlop Tuoyuan (拓源) has emerged from stealth with hundreds of millions of RMB (USD $14M+) in early-stage financing to commercialize neutral-atom quantum processing units (QPUs).
Founded in July 2026 by CEO Dr. Qiao Mu—a 29-year-old quantum physicist who opted for entrepreneurship after receiving a faculty appointment offer at Tsinghua University’s Department of Physics—the company closed consecutive Seed and Angel funding rounds within two months of incorporation. The investment was backed by prominent venture capital firms, including Source Code Capital, Oasis Capital, and CICC Capital.

Tuoyuan’s founding team brings technical experience spanning both trapped-ion and neutral-atom hardware modalities. Dr. Mu completed his Ph.D. at Tsinghua University‘s Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences before conducting postdoctoral research on Rydberg atom optical tweezer arrays at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Institut d’Optique. The company’s co-founder previously headed neutral-atom quantum computing development at a major industrial tech firm.
While current neutral-atom platforms have scaled physical qubit counts into multi-hundred-atom arrays, Tuoyuan is designing its system architecture specifically around fault-tolerant quantum error correction (FTQC), establishing a 100-logical-qubit processor as its primary medium-term development target. Additionally, the startup is incorporating an “AI-native” operational paradigm, deploying autonomous AI agents to automate optical tweezer experimental design, real-time data processing, and hardware control.
