Dirac Labs Joins Wisconsin Security Research Consortium to Advance Quantum PNT for Autonomous Defense Platforms

University of Wisconsin–Madison quantum sensing spinout Dirac Labs has joined the Wisconsin Security Research Consortium (WSRC) as an industry affiliate. The partnership focuses on deploying quantum-enabled Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems to support GPS-independent autonomous maritime, subsurface, and defense operations.

Dirac Labs is developing a quantum universal positioning system that utilizes diamond-based quantum sensors to measure Earth’s magnetic field with high precision. Integrated with artificial intelligence models for real-time signal processing, the system turns magnetic anomaly variations into drift-free position coordinates, offering a passive alternative that cannot be jammed or spoofed in GPS-contested environments.

[ Technical Architecture & Integration Parameters ]
System ComponentTechnical ImplementationOperational Impact & Deployment Scope
• Sensing Modality• Diamond Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) magnetic sensors• Passive, drift-free geolocation operating underwater, underground, and under electronic warfare jamming.
• Signal Processing• Real-time AI filtering models• Converts ambient Earth magnetic field measurements into reliable navigation coordinates.
• Platform Integration• Direct connection to standard vehicle GPS ports• Plugs into existing avionics and maritime hardware without requiring platform re-engineering.
• Manufacturing Strategy• Commercial semiconductor foundry processes• Bypasses custom fabrication barriers to enable low-cost, scalable sensor production.

The affiliation aligns with the regional Area 52 defense testing initiative, which leverages Lake Michigan’s deepwater geography and FAA-restricted airspace to validate uncrewed surface and subsurface maritime platforms. By manufacturing sensors on standard semiconductor foundry infrastructure and interfacing via standard GPS ports, Dirac Labs aims to bypass traditional cost and scaling barriers that have historically limited quantum sensing to laboratory environments.
