Three different U.S. government requests for proposals have been issued for different types of quantum research. The first is from the Department of Energy to provide $25 million for basic research toward the development of a quantum internet with a goal of building a regional scale testbed. The second announcement is from the U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) in collaboration with the Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) for research in the next New and Emerging Qubit Science and Technology (nextNEQST) program. nextNEQST focuses on qubit systems that explore new operating regimes and environments, fundamentally new methods of fabrication, and new methods of design, control, or operation. The goal is to find technologies with novel properties that create significant advantages in coherence, fabrication, and/or qubit operation over current state-of-the-art qubits. The third is from the U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) in partnership with NSA’s Laboratory for Physical Science (LPS) for Incubator, Collaboration, and Fellowship research proposals for participation in the LPS Qubit Collaboratory (LQC). Incubator proposals are those from single investigators and small research groups, including teaching colleges, who may have unique skillsets to contribute toward the pursuit of the many and varied research thrusts described in the announcement. Collaboratory proposals would bring together a strong significant collaboration of researchers from academia, industry, and/or Government Laboratories to pursue long-term projects focused on fundamental problems of interest to qubit development and/or associated science and technology. Fellowship research proposals seek to support talented U.S. citizen graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the field of quantum information processing (primary interest) and quantum sensing (secondary interest).
Details on the DOE Quantum Internet announcement can be found in the announcement document here. It has a deadline for proposals of May 28, 2021. Details on the nextNEQST Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) can be seen here. The deadline for submitting a white paper is May 18, 2021 and for the proposal the deadline is July 20, 2021. The Broad Agency Announcement for the LPS Qubit Collaboratory (LQC) can be viewed here. It is a continuously open announcement valid through 30 April 2026, unless announced otherwise.
