Infleqtion will lead a new neutral atom quantum technology program in Illinois, established as a public-private partnership with the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) and the National Quantum Algorithm Center (NQAC). This initiative aims to build a utility-scale, neutral atom quantum computer in Illinois, with the system targeting 100 logical qubits and leveraging thousands of neutral atom qubits.
This partnership will span over the next four years with an expected budget of $50 Million. As part of the agreement, Infleqtion has agreed to invest $14 million and hire at least 36 new employees, in addition to the 14 retained employees in the Chicago area. In return, Infleqion will receive a tax credit from the State of Illinois of an estimated $5.3 million. The project will also benefit from funding that comes from other sources such as ARPA-E, the U.S. Army, and private foundations like Wellcome Leap.
The system will feature the next-generation of Infleqtion’s Sqale quantum computer, which manipulates individual neutral atoms. This platform utilizes laser-controlled architectures and dynamic reconfigurability. The installed Sqale quantum computer will integrate Infleqtion’s Superstaq compiler, advanced optical control technologies, and quantum error correction protocols to support utility-scale workloads. Infleqtion has previously demonstrated arrays with 1600 atoms and achieved a 99.73% user-facing two-qubit fidelity for neutral atoms.
This project is positioned to advance Illinois’ efforts to build utility-scale quantum platforms. Illinois plans to become Infleqtion’s headquarters for quantum computing initiatives, creating a unified quantum research, development, and workforce pipeline leveraging the state’s national labs, universities, and industry partners. Infleqtion plans to expand its workforce in Illinois, including 50 new roles across engineering, commercialization, and research. The initiative aims to generate new opportunities for capital investment, job creation, and research acceleration within the state.
The Sqale quantum computer is intended to enable AI applications through the Contextual Machine Learning (CML) algorithm, and support applications in materials science, AI, drug discovery, and national security. The project complements Illinois’ recent public investments in quantum technology and new quantum-focused tax incentives. This collaboration aligns with strategic government-funded programs such as ARPA-E and the U.S. Army, and private foundations like Wellcome Leap.
