The University of Maryland’s Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) has launched the Maryland Institute for Quantum Applications. The new center will focus on exploring how quantum computing, sensing, and networking technologies can be applied to national intelligence and security challenges. It builds on ARLIS’s prior work in assessing and integrating quantum technologies for government use, and on UMD’s broader quantum science research portfolio.
The launch follows ARLIS’s recent acquisition of nearly $25 million in quantum-related research funding and aligns with Maryland’s Capital of Quantum initiative—a public-private effort announced in January 2025 to drive $1 billion in quantum investment. The new institute aims to develop strategic tools and systems informed by quantum capabilities, while ensuring alignment with Department of Defense and national security requirements.
The institute will also support workforce development through programs like the Research for Intelligence & Security Challenges internship, and expand applied research collaborations with the defense and intelligence communities. ARLIS, a Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Center, is located in UMD’s Discovery District and is the only UARC focused specifically on intelligence and security.
