Cineca, an Italian supercomputing center, has announced an agreement with IQM Quantum Computers to install the IQM Radiance 54-qubit quantum computer in Bologna, Italy. The system, scheduled for delivery in Q4 2025, will be integrated into Leonardo, one of the world’s fastest supercomputers. This will be the first on-premises quantum computer at Cineca.

The IQM Radiance 54 is a full-stack superconducting quantum computer designed for applications in optimization, quantum cryptography, quantum communication, and quantum algorithms for artificial intelligence. Researchers at Cineca will use the system to explore quantum use cases that cannot be emulated on classical hardware.

This collaboration supports Italy’s efforts to expand its quantum computing capabilities. The integration of quantum computing with high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure like Leonardo is expected to enable new research opportunities in Italy.
