D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) and BASF, a chemical company, have completed a proof-of-concept project that used a hybrid-quantum application to optimize manufacturing workflows in a BASF liquid-filling facility. The application achieved a significant reduction in production scheduling time from 10 hours using an industrial-grade classical solver to just five seconds.
The hybrid-quantum application was designed to improve efficiency in the facility by optimizing task scheduling and liquid tank assignments. The application delivered quantifiable improvements over an existing classical solution, reducing lateness by 14%, decreasing setup times by 9%, and shortening tank unloading durations by up to 18%. The project demonstrated that the hybrid-quantum technology could support rapid decision-making, which is often difficult for classical-only optimization technology.
The application’s ability to quickly generate solutions is intended to help address manufacturing and supply-chain operational bottlenecks. D-Wave views this project as an important milestone on the path to deploying hybrid-quantum applications in production within the manufacturing and supply chain industries.
