IBM and the Basque Government have announced plans to install Europe’s first IBM Quantum System Two at the IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computational Center in San Sebastian, Spain. The system, expected to be operational by the end of 2025, will be powered by a 156-qubit IBM Quantum Heron processor, IBM’s most advanced quantum processor to date. This installation is part of the BasQ initiative, which aims to establish the Basque Country as a leading hub for quantum technologies.

The IBM Quantum System Two is designed to execute utility-scale algorithms beyond the capabilities of classical simulation methods, leveraging Qiskit software to run quantum circuits with up to 5,000 two-qubit gate operations. Researchers at the center will use the system to advance discoveries in physics, information science, and materials science, while also supporting the Basque Country’s IKUR 2030 vision for quantum technologies. The initiative includes workforce development programs to build quantum expertise and promote economic growth in the region.

This deployment is part of IBM’s efforts to expand Europe’s quantum ecosystem, providing researchers, developers, and industry experts with access to advanced quantum technologies. The collaboration between IBM and the Basque Government underscores the growing importance of quantum computing in driving innovation and addressing complex challenges in sustainability and materials research.
