IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a quantum computing and networking company, has announced the completion of its acquisition of Capella Space Corporation, an American space technology company with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and satellite solutions. The acquisition aims to support IonQ’s mission to develop a space-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) network, intended to enable quantum-secure global communications.

With the acquisition finalized, IonQ will commence development of a space-based QKD network by integrating Capella’s satellite infrastructure with its quantum technology. This QKD network is designed to enable secure communications that prevent encryption keys from being intercepted or copied without detection. The platform is also intended to support additional quantum networking and sensing developments. Capella customers are expected to gain access to SAR and remote sensing through a quantum-enabled Earth observation platform.

This acquisition, along with IonQ’s previously announced ID Quantique agreement, is positioned to advance IonQ’s quantum networking technologies for building quantum internet infrastructure. The news also builds on IonQ’s recent quantum networking contracts, including those with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The integration of satellite capabilities is expected to support commercial applications, global defense, and intelligence missions by enabling secure communications.
