IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has announced a $21.1 million project with the United States Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to develop secure quantum networking infrastructure. The initiative, facilitated through IonQ’s recent acquisition of Qubitekk, will focus on establishing free-space optical links between ground stations and drones, enhancing secure communication and distributed quantum computing capabilities.

The project, based at the Innovare Advancement Center in Rome, New York, aims to create high-performing quantum network access points and integrate quantum hardware with existing telecommunications infrastructure. This collaboration builds on IonQ’s growing momentum in quantum networking, including a $54.5 million contract with AFRL in September 2024 and other significant agreements.

IonQ CEO Peter Chapman highlighted the importance of the partnership, emphasizing the company’s commitment to advancing quantum technologies for national security and commercial applications. The project underscores IonQ’s leadership in quantum computing and networking, supported by its IonQ Forte and Tempo systems.
