IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), through its subsidiary ID Quantique (IDQ), has announced the deployment of the Slovak Quantum Communication Infrastructure (skQCI), the nation’s first national quantum communication network. Developed in partnership with the Institute of Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences (IPSAS), the system features a resilient hybrid architecture designed to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity infrastructure and reinforce Europe’s EuroQCI initiative.
The skQCI project is a major component of the broader European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative, which aims to establish a secure, quantum-resistant communication backbone across the European Union (EU). The network connects multiple metropolitan and remote sites using a state-of-the-art Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) architecture, complemented by a hybrid QKD–PQC (post-quantum cryptography) system for cross-country connections.
In the metropolitan area of Bratislava, the infrastructure will securely interconnect strategic national institutions, including the Office of the President (Presidential Palace), the National Security Authority facilities, and the Quantum Pavilion of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The project is led by IPSAS with support from the, underscoring the nation’s commitment to technological leadership and digital sovereignty.
The deployment reinforces IonQ’s expanding presence and commitment to European quantum infrastructure, and the project aligns with Slovakia’s commitment to both deploying commercially available solutions (first generation) and investing in second-generation quantum technologies for future quantum information transfer.
