The Karnataka State Government, represented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has announced the launch of the Karnataka Quantum Mission (KQM). The mission is supported by a ₹1,000 crore ($114 million USD) fund and is aligned with the state’s Quantum Vision 2035, which aims to build a $20 billion quantum economy and create 10,000 high-skilled jobs in the quantum sector by 2035. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Quantum India Bengaluru 2025 summit.
The KQM is structured around five pillars: Talent Development, Research & Development Excellence, Infrastructure Creation, Industry Support, and Global Partnerships. The mission includes plans to establish a Quantum Technology Task Force to steer policy and strategic direction, and to create an integrated quantum innovation hub called Q-City. The mission also plans to establish India’s first Quantum Hardware Park, four Innovation Zones, and a dedicated FabLine to support the domestic manufacturing of quantum components.
Specific goals for talent and R&D include introducing quantum skilling programs in over 20 colleges, supporting 150 PhD fellowships annually, and developing quantum systems, including 1,000-qubit processors. The mission also aims to nurture over 100 startups, facilitate more than 100 patent filings, and launch a Quantum Venture Capital Fund. NS Boseraju, Minister for Science & Technology, noted that the state expects to establish quantum chip fabrication capabilities by the end of the year.
The initiative, aligned with India’s National Quantum Mission, aims to translate quantum research into solutions for healthcare, defense, finance, and governance, with the ultimate goal of positioning Karnataka as the Quantum Capital of Asia. The launch of the KQM reflects the theme of the Quantum India Bengaluru 2025 summit, ‘Building a Quantum Ecosystem: Qubits to Society.’
