Keyfactor, in partnership with Wakefield Research, has announced findings from its Digital Trust Digest: The Quantum Readiness Edition. The report indicates that 48% of surveyed organizations are not prepared to confront the challenges posed by quantum computing, which is expected to render current public-key cryptography obsolete. The study, based on a survey of 450 cybersecurity leaders across North America and Europe, also highlights that 56% of mid-sized organizations report being unprepared for these threats.
The report reveals that 42% of organizations are actively addressing Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), but a portion still plans to respond only when risks become more immediate (33%), or are waiting to observe actions by other companies (24%), with 2% having no plans at all. A disconnect in risk perception is observed, where 53% of VPs and Directors believe their organizations are unprepared, compared to 35% of C-suite executives. Companies that perceive PQC as a significant undertaking are more than twice as likely (49%) to be taking steps compared to those who view the risks as minor (24%).
Top challenges hindering PQC progress include a lack of skilled personnel (40%), limited time and competing priorities (40%), and unclear industry standards (39%). Despite these barriers, respondents cited stronger cybersecurity (54%), enhanced customer trust (50%), reduced cyber insurance premiums (49%), and a competitive edge (48%) as key business benefits for PQC readiness. Cybersecurity teams are identified as the primary champions of PQC preparedness within companies (46%), followed by the C-suite (33%) and board members (22%).
The Digital Trust Digest underscores that PQC migration, while awareness is growing, shows a lag in comprehensive action. Keyfactor CEO Jordan Rackie emphasized the foundational role of cryptography and the impending threat from cryptographically relevant quantum computers. The findings suggest that organizations prioritizing PQC as a strategic imperative are positioned to enhance their security and resilience. Keyfactor’s platform is noted for its capabilities in digital trust and preparing organizations for PQC transition.
