Palo Alto Networks has introduced PAN-OS® 12.1 Orion, a new operating system engineered to make network security more resilient. A key feature of the release is a focus on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) readiness, providing tools for organizations to address the risk posed by future quantum computers.
The new operating system includes a Quantum Readiness assessment to inventory cryptographic usage and identify compliance with PQC standards across an enterprise. For legacy applications that cannot be immediately upgraded, the release introduces a cipher translation feature that can upgrade them to be quantum safe. Additionally, the company announced new fifth-generation quantum-optimized Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) that are built to decrypt and inspect PQC-encrypted traffic. The new hardware includes a PA-5500 Series for data centers with quantum-optimized processing and a ruggedized PA-455R-5G for industrial environments.
The PQC features are designed to provide a path for organizations to prepare for the quantum computing era, addressing the multi-year journey of PQC migration. This release offers tools for assessment, planning, and deployment. The introduction of these commercial PQC solutions from a major cybersecurity company can signal a shift in the industry and accelerate the adoption of quantum-safe technology by enterprises and government customers.
