Quobly, a pioneer in silicon-based quantum microelectronics, has announced a major milestone in establishing its industrial supply chain: the first custom 28Si FD-SOI wafers, manufactured by Soitec, are now cycling inside STMicroelectronics’ 300 mm manufacturing facility in Crolles, France.
This collaboration establishes a fully integrated European value chain from advanced materials to quantum integrated circuits. The FD-SOI (Fully Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator) substrates have been engineered to eliminate isotopic impurities, drastically reducing quantum noise. This technical step is critical for unlocking single-qubit gate fidelities that approach 99.999%—a key threshold for building reliable and scalable silicon-based quantum processors.
The project leverages the strengths of all three partners: Soitec for the industrial manufacturing of the advanced 28Si substrates, STMicroelectronics for technology and process validation in a high-volume 300 mm fab, and Quobly for the development of the quantum devices. The integration of the FD-SOI platform—a proven, low-noise, CMOS-compatible architecture—with the purified silicon channel offers a scalable path towards million-qubit technology.
This milestone is a global first in the field of FD-SOI utilizing a 28Si-enriched channel. Quobly expects to receive the earliest performance metrics of these prototype devices in the first quarter of 2026, building upon STMicroelectronics’ 28 nm FD-SOI process.
