Riverlane, a quantum error correction (QEC) company, has announced the integration of its second-generation QEC technology, Deltaflow 2, at a commercial data center operated by CentreSquare, where it is co-located with an Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) quantum computer. This marks the first deployment of dedicated QEC technology in a UK commercial quantum setting, indicating a step toward building scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computers.
Deltaflow 2 introduces streaming quantum memory, designed to continuously protect quantum information during computation. It aims to deliver real-time error correction at speeds sufficient to preserve useful information across thousands of operations, supporting future systems intended for millions of operations. The technology combines a custom QEC chip, implemented on FPGA hardware, with Riverlane’s proprietary software stack. It is designed to support all major qubit platforms, including superconducting, spin, trapped ion, and neutral atom, and currently supports surface code and repetition code.
The deployment at the CentreSquare facility includes integration with high-performance classical computing systems and a digital twin for simulating and monitoring noise in the quantum system. This initial phase focuses on validating QEC routines and benchmarking system behavior in a real-world environment. It establishes a foundation for future integration with OQC’s superconducting qubit hardware, where Riverlane and OQC plan to demonstrate real-time QEC during live quantum operations. OQC is currently working with physical and error-detected qubits at this location and has reported a 20X improvement in qubit stability with its Dimon design from internal benchmarking.
This integration is part of the UK Government-funded DECIDE project, which aims to build national capability in QEC and support the UK’s broader quantum infrastructure goals. The work aligns with Mission 1 of the UK’s National Quantum Strategy, targeting the achievement of a MegaQuOp (one million error-corrected quantum operations) by 2028. Riverlane is also collaborating with other partners, such as Infleqtion and Rigetti Computing, through initiatives supported by the UK’s National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC), reflecting a growing demand for dedicated QEC technology.
