Turkcell (NYSE:TKC) (BIST:TCELL), a telecommunications and technology company, has collaborated with Juniper Networks and ID Quantique (a subsidiary of IonQ) to validate a proof-of-concept (PoC) for quantum-safe services. This PoC demonstrates the integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) with Juniper’s MACsec and IPsec frameworks to protect Turkcell’s mobile backhaul networks against emerging quantum threats.
The PoC successfully showcased quantum-resilient protection for critical mobile backhaul elements, including Precision Timing Protocols (PTP) and encrypted data, without compromising performance or introducing latency. Turkcell validated MACsec and IPsec encryption using Juniper SRX Series Firewalls, MX, and ACX Series Routers. The validation involved ID Quantique’s Clavis XG and Clarion KX systems, which delivered quantum-generated keys, ensuring seamless integration and timing accuracy. The joint solution preserved 5G timing accuracy and IP traffic integrity even with quantum-secure key exchange in place, operating alongside existing network infrastructure.
This initiative addresses the increasing vulnerability of mobile networks to quantum computing advancements, particularly regarding timing-reliant 5G backhaul. The successful PoC provides a model for the telecom sector, demonstrating that critical network protocols and data can be effectively protected in a quantum-safe manner using field-deployed equipment, enabling incremental adoption of quantum-safe cybersecurity technologies. The collaboration highlights a strategy for maintaining reliable services and safeguarding user data against future cyber threats as the industry transitions towards quantum-resistant security measures.
