The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Technology Transitions has announced the expansion of its Quantum in Space Collaboration, adding five new signatories: Boeing, Axiom Space, Vescent, Qrypt, and USRA. Blue Origin is also reviewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). These new partners join existing collaborators, including Infleqtion, Accenture, and Nebula, to advance quantum technologies for space applications.
The collaboration aims to explore the use of quantum computing, sensing, and networking to support a secure space economy, including resource exploration, manufacturing, and secure communications. Key initiatives include developing unhackable mesh networks, hybrid quantum computing capabilities, and leveraging microgravity for advanced materials and manufacturing.
Rima Oueid, DOE’s Senior Commercialization Executive, highlighted the potential of quantum technologies to revolutionize space exploration and secure space-based infrastructure. Jason Aspiotis of Axiom Space and representatives from Qrypt and Vescent emphasized the strategic and commercial opportunities of integrating quantum technologies into space systems.
