The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) has been awarded a $3.8 million grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech) to expand a statewide initiative with Western New England University. The new funding builds on an initial $1 million investment from MassTech in 2022, and is intended to accelerate quantum hardware development and commercialization.
The initial funding helped establish a quantum core measurement facility and acquire advanced cryogenic testbeds, including dilution refrigerators. This next phase will establish a new quantum hardware packaging and assembly facility in Hatfield, Mass., and supports emerging technologies in quantum computing, sensing, communication, and cryptography. The project also launches the Quantum Jumpstart seed grant program to accelerate product development and validation.
The initiative is intended to strengthen Massachusetts’ position in quantum innovation and address the industry bottleneck of limited hardware development capacity and the skills gap. The central pillar of the program is quantum workforce development, aimed at training quantum-aware engineers and technicians. Governor Maura Healey noted that Massachusetts is supporting its knowledge-based economy through this funding.
